What I Do

I work in four overlapping ways.

As an artistic director: I direct large-scale events, theatre, and immersive experiences, and curate programmes across all art forms.

As an artistic adviser: I help cultural institutions think clearly about programming, commissioning, growing their networks, and the relationships between what they do and who they do it for.

As a strategist: I work with boards, CEOs, artistic directors and executive teams navigating moments of transition: new leadership, new premises, new funding realities, or the kind of drift that happens when an institution has stopped asking itself the hard questions. I am most useful as a provocateur at the front end of a dream or challenge, as a cheerleader during the long journey, and then as a lander of planes as the whole thing reaches fruition.

As a keynote speaker and facilitator: I speak about creative leadership, about what it takes to make ambitious things happen inside complex organisations, and about the specific lessons of a career spent persuading cities and artists to do things they did not expect to do. I guest lecture with universities and leadership programmes, and am finishing writing a book that explores the methodology behind all of it.

I am currently working with London International Festival of Theatre, En Garde Arts in New York, La Mecànica in Spain, World Cities Culture Forum, Resonate Productions in Amsterdam, and London's Royal Docks.

Recent work includes Brooklyn Academy of Music, Charleston Gaillard Center in South Carolina, Ithra in Saudi Arabia, and Grec Festival Barcelona.
