Perth International Arts Festival

Date

2011 - 2015

Location

Perth, Western Australia

Role

Artistic Director

The Southern Hemisphere’s longest running international arts festival: 23 days of theatre, opera, music, dance, and circus, alongside an international writers festival, two months of visual arts, 26 weeks of film, and year-round creative learning programs.

Jonathan devised, programmed and delivered four festivals that combined artistic excellence with deep community engagement, leading a year-round team of 25+, scaling to 200+ during the festival.

The team expanded creative learning to reach over 13,000 participants annually, fostering accessibility and youth engagement, and advocated for Noongar Nation cultural inclusion, positioning Indigenous voices central to the Festival.

Artistic highlights:

- commissioned/world premiered Philip Glass's final three piano etudes
- commissioned a new opera of The Rabbits
- exclusive of ENO/Met Opera's Madama Butterfly
- exclusive of Berliner Ensemble/Robert Wilson's Threepenny Opera
- opened festival with 30,000 people dancing in the streets as two tonnes of feathers fell from the sky.
- exclusively presented Royal de Luxe’s The Giants, drawing 1.4M attendees

As a result, audiences grew from 350K to c.1.8M, and turnover increased from $14M to $22.5M.
